Boat Hoist

Lifting a Catalina 22 from the trailer with a hoist is fairly simple if the boat is set up correctly.

  1. Anchor the two forward cleats to the bow eye.

    • Be sure the cleats are good aluminum, not plastic.

    • Connect an eye strap to the under side of each cleat.

    • Fasten plate with two holes to the bow eye.

    • Connect a turnbuckle in each of the holes.

    • Connect the turn buckles to a short 1/8" stainless wire.

    • Connect the other end of the stainless wire to the eye strap under each cleat.

    • Adjust each turnbuckle until the stainless wire is tight.

  2. Anchor each of the aft cleats to the transom of the boat.

    • Fasten an eye strap on the inside of the transom as low and outboard as possible. Use two 1/4" bolts with fender washer on the outside (see "A" in center photo).

    • Connect an eye strap to the under side of each cleat.

    • Connect a turnbuckle in each of the eye straps on the transom.

    • Connect the turn buckles to a short 1/8" stainless wire.

    • Connect the other end of the stainless wire to the eye strap under each cleat.

    • Adjust each turnbuckle until the stainless wire is tight.

  3. Make a lifting harness as follows.

    • Material Needed:

      • One stainless steel ring 3 1/4" in diameter

      • Four carabineers 4" long from a hardware store

      • Enough 1/8" wire rope to make two lines 147" long and two lines 124" long.

      • Four thimbles and four nicopress sleeves.

    • Cut the wire long enough to accommodate length needed for thimble and  nicopress.

    • Fasten all four lines to the stainless ring.

    • Fasten each line to one carabineer.

  4. Lifting the Boat

    • Connect the carabineers to the fore and aft cleats (see "B" & "C" in center photo).

    • Hook the crane lift to the stainless ring and lift the boat (see the left photo). Lines have been drawn on the photo for clarity to show ring and lifting wires.

    • The boat will be lifted parallel to the trailer.

Be sure to do a good job on the nicopress fittings, some might want to use 2 fittings for security. This system has been used on BULLETPROOF since 1992 and has never experienced any problem.
